      Biographical note: Noel Desmond McIntosh was born on 8 February 1903 at North Sydney, the son of Herbert Edgar McIntosh and his wife Edith nee Hickson. He was educated at King's School, Parramatta, the Sydney Church of England Grammar School, and St Paul's College, University of Sydney (LLB 1925). He was a member of the 1924/25 Debates Committee of the Sydney University Union and the 1925/26 General Committee of the Sydney University Lawn Tennis Club. Whilst at University, he gained legal experience working in the office of his father, a solicitor. (1)

      McIntosh was a tennis player and debater. He was captain of the NSW junior tennis team which won the Linton Cup in 1924. In the same year he was runner-up with Harry Hopman in the Australian junior doubles tennis championship. In 1925-1926 he toured America and England with the University of Sydney international debating team, of which he was captain. The team conducted more than thirty debates in 23 American universities and at Cambridge and Oxford. (2)

      McIntosh was admitted to the New South Wales Bar on 14 May 1925. His practice was in Chancery Chambers. He was made a Queens' Counsel in 1952. (3)

      During World War II, McIntosh served with the Royal Australian Air Force. He enlisted on 30 March 1942 and at the time of his discharge on 17 February 1947 was a Squadron Leader at 5 Maintenance Group Headquarters. (4)

      On 18 October 1965, McIntosh was appointed a Judge of all District Court and Chairman of the Courts of Quarter Sessions. He retired on 3 February 1973. (5)

      McIntosh was an alderman of Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council from 1936 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1949. He was Mayor from 1939 to 1941. He was the first Secretary and treasurer of the Australian Lawn Tennis Umpires Association which was formed in 1955. (6)

      McIntosh died at Canberra on 2 August 1986. On 19 December 1929 he married Edith Hinton nee Forsyth and they had one son. (7)
